What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses a strong chemical solution to exfoliate dull, dead skin cells on the top layers of your skin. Chemical peels like BioRePeel, help boost the production of collagen and elastin in the skin and regenerate new, smooth skin to grow.

There are several reasons individuals may get chemical peels. Chemical peels can help address a variety of conditions, including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Melasma and hyperpigmentation
  • Scars
  • Uneven skin tone or redness

Chemical Peel Benefits

One of the key advantages of chemical peels is their versatility. They can address various skin concerns, such as aging, sun damage, and acne, while boosting collagen production for long-term skin health.

Additional benefits of chemical peels include:

  • Smoother skin texture and tone
  • Diminished fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved pigmentation
  • Smaller-looking pores
  • Reduced appearance of scars
  • Increase in collagen and elastin production
  • Boost skin health
  • Safe for all skin tones and types
  • Glowing, radiant appearance

What Are the Different Types of Chemical Peels?

There are three different chemical peels, each targeting a different concern. They vary in strength, the duration of time they are left on the skin, and the goal of the treatment.

Light Peel

Also known as a superficial peel, this treatment gently exfoliates dead skin cells from the top layer. A light peel uses mild acids such as alpha-hydroxy acid. Recovery time is about one week. It is safe to repeat treatment every 4 to 6 weeks. You may need multiple treatments to see the desired results.

Medium Peel

Medium peels, like the BioRePeel, take exfoliation a step further by targeting skin cells from the top and middle layers of the skin. The treatment uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate and remove damaged skin cells effectively. Medium peels help correct UV damage, pigmentation, acne, and scarring and improve skin texture. Healing time is about 2 weeks, with maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months.

Deep Peel

Deep chemical peels are the most aggressive form of treatment, as they fully penetrate the deeper layers of the dermis. They often use trichloroacetic or phenolic acid, and recovery time lasts about 3 weeks. Due to their intensity, deep peels are generally only performed once.

What to Expect at a Chemical Peel Treatment

At your chemical peel treatment, a dermatologist preps your skin by cleansing it and applying isopropyl alcohol or acetone. This helps remove any natural oil and bacteria from your face to ensure the peel penetrates properly.

Next, they will apply a chemical solution to your face using a cotton ball, sponge, or brush. Depending on the depth of the peel, this may contain chemicals like salicylic acid, alpha or beta hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acid, or retinoids. Your doctor will numb the area with a topical anesthetic if you receive a deep peel. After they apply the peel, they will leave it on for a specific amount of time.

You may feel a tingling or burning sensation on light and medium peels. Your skin will begin to turn white. Like a hand-held fan, you may be given a cooling device to ease any discomfort. For deep peels, you will be given anesthesia and should not feel any pain or discomfort during treatment. Deep peels are done in 15-minute increments to limit your skin’s exposure to the acid. Once complete, they remove the chemical peel and may apply a neutralizing solution to your skin.

What To Expect After a Chemical Peel

Recovery time varies depending on the chemical peel you receive.

Light Peel

For light chemical peels, your skin will be red and slightly swollen. It can take anywhere from 1 to 7 days for your skin to heal. After the redness disappears, your skin may scale or flake for up to one week after your treatment.

Medium Peel

After a medium chemical peel, your skin will be red and swollen. Symptoms will worsen for the first 48 hours after your treatment. Your skin may blister, scab, and crust, followed by flaking and peeling. Recovery can take up to two weeks before revealing healthy, glowing skin.

Deep Peel

Deep chemical peels will cause more intense swelling and redness. A surgical dressing or bandage protects your skin and covers any peeling or crusting. You may experience burning and throbbing sensations as well. It can take up to three weeks for your skin to fully heal and for new skin to develop.

Potential Side Effects of Chemical Peels

Common side effects are generally temporary. They include redness, dryness, burning, and swelling. With deeper peels, the side effects are more intense. Like all cosmetic procedures, chemical peels carry some level of risk.

Potential chemical peel side effects include:

  • Persistent redness
  • Temporary darkening of the skin
  • Permanent lightening of the skin (with medium and deep peels)
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Cold-sore outbreak

Working with a qualified and knowledgeable doctor can help lower your risk of complications from a chemical peel. Additionally, you reduce your risk of developing an infection or scarring by following aftercare instructions.
